THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Attendance at Toogoolawa School leads the student into an educational world which is not confined to the classroom, but also utilises adventure therapy, community service and sport as opportunities to develop social skills,
courage and heightened self-esteem
SCHOOL REGISTRATION
A Toogoolawa School is registered according to the standards set by the Department of Education. Although greater emphasis is placed on character development than on scholastic performance the academic program is still based on Department of Education requirements.
THE TOOGOOLAWA SCHOOL PROGRAM aims to:
|
Develop good character traits in the students so they can become responsible members of society; |
|
Prepare students for returning to a mainstream school, attending a TAFE college or entering the workforce; |
|
Structure the school environment so that each student succeeds much more than he fails, and comes to see all mistakes as further opportunities for learning. |
THE TEACHING STAFF
Directed by two clinical psychologists, Suwanti and Ron Farmer,
the Toogoolawa School employs five professionally qualified teachers, four teaching assistants and a counsellor for a maximum enrolment of 40 students at present. The ratio of teaching staff to students is kept at 1 to 6 as much as possible.
Volunteers are carefully selected and trained for the individualised academic training program.
GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE
Each student receives professional counselling and participates in behavioural management routines and contracts.
Discipline is set at a high standard, designed to assist the student to live according to the five Human Values of
Love, Peace, Truth, Right Conduct and Non-violence
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Parents are encouraged to support their son's progress at school by:
|
Seeking to live according to the five Human Values, thereby becoming an excellent role-model for their son; |
|
Reading teachers' reports and writing in the communication book their own weekly assessment of noticeable gains in the character of their son; |
|
Making themselves available for discussions with the teachers and attending Open Days at the School; |
|
Displaying in the home (perhaps on the door of the refrigerator) the 'wise saying' being focussed on during that week at the School.
|
Each parent is provided with a copy of the book, 'A Book For Our Parents', to give them an understanding of the five Human Values and the part they can play in reinforcing the moral values introduced to the students in the school setting. (see more on Book for Parents under Resources).
SELECTION OF STUDENTS
A student seeking enrolment in the School will be interviewed with his parent/carer by the principal and/or senior teacher. If the student is assessed as having the potential to benefit from attending Toogoolawa School he will be invited to personally phone the principal within 24 hours, indicating whether he would like to attend the School. It is explained to the boy and his parents that enrolment would be initially for a trial period of four weeks.
For enrolment to proceed after the trial period, the teachers must be confident that the student and parent(s) or guardian(s) are willing to cooperate with them and support the aims of the School.
